Preparing to Serve the Needs of COVD-19 Vaccine Production

Written by Guest Contributor | Jul 2, 2025 2:31:53 PM

It’s a sign of the unprecedented times that we’re living in today that the world has need for
a COVID-19 Vaccine Tracker. But there it is on the Internet, a portal that allows visitors to
observe the various stages of development that potential COVID-19 vaccines are in. As of
late September, of the original 201 possible vaccines that had entered an Exploratory
Stage (with 168 of those at least reaching the Pre-Clinical Stage), 33 had advance to the
Human Trials Stage, with eight having entered Stage 3, or the final trial stage before being
sent to the Approval Stage.

While no one knows exactly when a vaccine will be approved or begin mass production,
it’s is patently clear that at some point in the next several months there will a need to mass
produce a vaccine in large enough quantities that will be able to satisfy the inoculation
needs of most of the world’s inhabitants. This global demand will require unprecedented
cooperation between drug manufacturers and the companies that supply them the
equipment and systems that are used to produce vaccines.

Quattroflow ™ , a product brand of PSG ® , offers to the pharmaceutical industry its quaternary (four-piston) diaphragm pumps in both multiple- and single-use configurations to the manufacturers of vaccines of all types. The design and operation of all Quattroflow pumps give them the ability to protect the integrity of all pharmaceutical end products by providing safe, clean and reliable transfer of high-purity process fluids, most notably vaccines, but also plasma products, therapeutic proteins, monoclonal antibodies and other high-value commodities.

Quattroflow offers the following quaternary-diaphragm pump models:

 Multiple-Use: QF150S, QF1200S, QF2500S, QF4400S, QF5050S, QF10K and
QF20K
 Single-Use: QF30SU, QF150SU, QF1200SU, QF2500SU, QF4400SU, QF5050SU
and QF20KSU

With flow rates of up top 16,000 L/hr (4,227 gph) and 10,000 L/hr (2,642 gph),
respectively, the QF20K and QF10K pumps can deliver the high flow rates that will be
required for the mass production of a COVID-19 vaccine, though all models are viable
options in any stage of vaccine development.

Quattroflow pumps are able to produce the flow rates needed for mas production of
vaccines while simultaneously protecting the integrity of the end product because their
method of operation allows them to gently, safely and securely convey aqueous solutions
that are shear sensitive. The pump’s four-piston design does not need a mechanical shaft
seal of wetted rotating parts, which ensures total product containment with shear-free
operation. The four-piston pumping principle also enables risk-free dry-run operation, low
pulsation, self-priming capabilities and minimal particle generation that can harm the
vaccine. The multi-use pumps have cleanable stainless-steel pump heads, while the

single-use models use plastic pump cambers that are completely disposable and can be
replaced in seconds.

Knowing the production demands that the looming creation and approval of a COVID-19
vaccine will place on the market, Quattroflow stands ready to offer its complete
quaternary-diaphragm pump portfolio for use in the systems that will be used to
manufacture this hyper-critical vaccine.
